Lufthansa Finally Has a World-Class Business Cabin
For years, Lufthansa operated one of the most lackluster business class products in the sky. The old 2-2-2 cabin layout meant window seat passengers had to climb over their neighbor every time they needed the aisle. On an 11-hour flight to San Francisco or New York, that’s a significant problem. Many experienced long-haul travelers avoided Lufthansa specifically because of it. With the new Lufthansa Allegris Business Class, that era is over.
Allegris is Lufthansa’s complete reinvention of its long-haul cabin. It is the result of a €2.5 billion investment across all cabin classes. In business class specifically, the transformation is dramatic. Every seat now has direct aisle access. The beds are longer. The technology is genuinely impressive. And for the first time, Lufthansa offers enclosed suites at the front of the business cabin that close the door behind you.
Allegris entered commercial service in 2024 and has been expanding steadily across Lufthansa’s fleet through 2025 and 2026. If you’re flying Lufthansa to Europe, Asia, or anywhere in between, here’s everything you need to know about the new product, including the one complexity that trips up many travelers when they book.
The Aircraft
Allegris business class currently flies on two aircraft types. The first is the Airbus A350-900, operating from Lufthansa’s Munich hub. Ten of these aircraft are currently equipped with the Allegris cabin, with more deliveries planned. The second is the Boeing 787-9, operating from Frankfurt. Eleven 787-9s now carry the Allegris business class cabin as of mid-2026, with 19 more Dreamliners expected by the end of 2027.
One important point: not all Lufthansa A350s and 787s have Allegris. Lufthansa still operates older versions of both aircraft types with the previous cabin. When booking, look for the label “Allegris: New seat concept” on the Lufthansa website to confirm that your specific flight has the new cabin. If you’re booking through a third-party platform, the seat map is your most reliable indicator: the Allegris layout is visually distinctive and unlike anything in Lufthansa’s previous configuration.
The A350 has 38 Allegris business class seats. The 787-9 carries 28 business class seats, of which 25 are now bookable following FAA certification in March 2026. Both aircraft use a mix of 1-2-1 and 1-1-1 configurations, depending on the seat type, which brings us to the most distinctive feature of the entire product.
Five Seat Types in One Cabin

This is what sets Allegris apart from every other business class product in the world. It also makes booking more complex than most others. Lufthansa doesn’t offer a single business class seat. Instead, the Allegris cabin has five distinct seating types, each with a different design, privacy level, and reservation fee.
Here’s what each one is.
Suite
The front row of each cabin section on the A350 (eight seats) and the front rows on the 787-9 (four seats). These are the most private seats on the plane. Full-height side panels, a closing door, a wardrobe, and a 27-inch 4K screen. The suite can also be configured for two travelers sharing the space, with the center console lowering to create a double suite. Suite passengers also receive pajamas, extra snacks, and premium beverages not available to other cabin passengers. Reservation fee: $460–$690 per segment, depending on route length.
Privacy Seat
Window seats with a long armrest console and a high privacy shield separating you from the aisle. No closing door, but the separation from aisle traffic is significant. These are a popular choice for solo travelers who want seclusion without paying suite prices. Reservation fee: approximately $115–$196 per segment.
Extra Long Bed Seat
The same core design as the Classic Seat, but with a few extra inches in lie-flat mode. The official spec is 86 inches (2.2 meters). Designed for taller passengers. Reservation fee: approximately $115–$196 per segment.
Extra Space Seat
The center “throne” seats with no immediate neighbor and high partitions on both sides. More storage than almost any other seat type, and excellent work surfaces. The trade-off is no window. This seat is Popular with travelers who prioritize workspace. Reservation fee: approximately $150–$265 per segment.
Classic Seat
This is the standard Allegris business class seat. Direct aisle access, fully flat bed, 18-inch 4K screen, seat heating and cooling. No reservation fee. The bed length on Classic Seats varies by row, from 74 to 78 inches, depending on placement. Adequate for most travelers, but passengers over 6 feet 2 inches may find it tight and are better served by the Extra Long Bed option.
One honest caveat on the Classic Seat: storage is more limited. The single compartment fills quickly with an amenity kit, water bottle, and headphones. Laptops must go in the overhead bin during takeoff and landing. The Extra Space and Suite options offer significantly more storage. So, if you work during flights, this is worth factoring in before you choose your seat.
Who gets to reserve for free? Miles & More HON Circle members can reserve Privacy, Extra Long Bed, and Extra Space seats at no charge. Senator members can reserve Privacy and Extra Space seats for free. Business Flex fare holders can also select Privacy seats at no cost. Finally, the Suite carries a fee for all travelers.

The Seat Technology
Allegris has introduced several genuinely novel features that no other business class currently offers.
First, the most talked-about is individual seat climate control: the world’s first heating and cooling system built into a commercial aircraft seat. You can adjust your seat temperature independently of the cabin. It works well for 15-45 minutes before turning off to avoid the fans from overheating. However, the ability to run cooler or warmer than the rest of the cabin is an appealing comfort upgrade on overnight flights.
Connectivity is strong throughout: universal power outlet, USB-A, USB-C with 60W fast charging, wireless charging pad, and a headphone jack. The wireless charging pad works best with cases removed (some phone cases prevent full charging).
The entertainment screen is 18 inches on Classic, Privacy, Extra Long Bed, and Extra Space seats, all 4K. Business Suite seats get a 27-inch 4K screen. A separate tablet-style controller lets you browse content while lying flat without reaching for the main screen. You can also connect your own Bluetooth headphones directly to the system.
Wi-Fi is available for business class passengers, but is not free. A full-flight browsing package is available for purchase. Nevertheless, messaging (WhatsApp, iMessage, and similar apps) is free. At a time when several US carriers are rolling out free Wi-Fi, this may seem odd.
Dining and Amenities
Lufthansa serves a multi-course meal in Allegris business class on all long-haul routes. Menus rotate seasonally and include a choice of hot and cold options — typically three to four mains, including a vegetarian option. A pre-arrival meal is served on overnight flights. The overall quality is solid European airline dining — not in the same tier as JAL’s kaiseki or Qatar’s dine-on-demand service, but a genuine step up from the previous Lufthansa product.

One notable absence: Lufthansa Allegris business class does not offer pajamas unless you’re in a Suite. On flights of 10 hours or more, this is a gap that travelers coming from Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, or Emirates will notice immediately. It’s the most common complaint across independent reviewer accounts.
The amenity kit is a Porsche Design pouch containing socks, an eye mask, a toothbrush and toothpaste, earplugs, a headset cover, a mint, and L’Occitane hand cream and lip balm. It’s a well-branded kit, better than what Lufthansa offered previously, though still below the depth of carriers like Qatar or Singapore.
Each seat comes with a mattress topper, a thick duvet, a pillow, and slippers. The bedding setup is comfortable and a noticeable upgrade from the old product.
At any point during the flight, the Allegris Snack Bar offers snacks, fresh fruit, and cold drinks with crew service around the clock. A small touch, but a practical one on long overnight flights when the main meal service is done.
Lounges on the Ground
Lufthansa operates a two-tier lounge system for business class passengers. In Frankfurt, the Lufthansa Business Lounges are large, functional spaces with buffet food, shower suites, and bar service — above average for a European carrier. Frankfurt is also home to the Lufthansa First Class Terminal, a separate building with private car transfers, à la carte dining, and spa services, reserved exclusively for First Class passengers.
In Munich, the Senator and Business Lounges are similarly well-equipped, with hot food, showers, and comfortable seating. The Munich lounges are generally considered slightly more relaxed than Frankfurt at peak times.
At destination airports, Lufthansa business class passengers use Star Alliance partner lounges. Quality varies by city. At major US hubs (New York JFK, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and Miami), the Star Alliance partner lounge experience is generally good.
US Routes With Lufthansa Allegris Business Class in 2026
For the summer 2026 season (through late October), confirmed US destinations with Allegris service from Munich or Frankfurt include Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York JFK, Newark, Miami, Dallas, Detroit, and Austin. New York JFK and Los Angeles via the 787-9 from Frankfurt were added in June 2026. Toronto, which had 787-9 service through the winter season, continues into the summer.
The critical reminder: not every Lufthansa flight to these cities uses an Allegris aircraft. Multiple aircraft types serve each route, and the specific plane assigned to your departure determines whether you get the new cabin. Aircraft assignments can also change after booking. Always verify the seat map close to your departure date.

How to Confirm Your Flight Has Allegris
This is where many travelers get caught out. They book what they think is an Allegris flight and arrive at the gate to find the old cabin. So, here’s how to verify before you book and before you fly.
1. When searching on lufthansa.com
Look for the text “Allegris: New seat concept” displayed alongside the flight result. Lufthansa adds this label to flights confirmed to operate with an Allegris aircraft. If the label isn’t there, the flight uses a different cabin configuration.
2. Check the seat map
Click through to the seat selection screen. The Lufthansa Allegris business class seat map is visually distinctive: you’ll see the mix of window-adjacent Privacy seats, center Throne seats, and front-row Suites in an alternating pattern unlike the uniform rows of the old 2-2-2 layout. If the map shows a standard symmetrical layout, you’re looking at the old product.
3. Use the aircraft type as a filter
On the booking search results, the aircraft type is usually listed. Allegris currently flies only on new-delivery A350-900s and 787-9s. However, Lufthansa also operates older A350s and 787s without Allegris, so aircraft type alone isn’t a guarantee, so always cross-check with the seat map.
4. Watch for Lufthansa’s email notification
Once you’ve booked, Lufthansa sends an email confirmation when an Allegris aircraft is assigned to your specific flight. If you receive this email, you’re confirmed. If the aircraft changes closer to departure, Lufthansa typically sends a second notification.
5. Check again 72 hours before departure
Aircraft assignments are subject to change right up to the day of travel. A quick look at the seat map on your booking reference 72 hours out confirms whether the Allegris aircraft is still scheduled. If it has changed, contacting Lufthansa or your booking agent at that point gives you the best chance of being moved to an equivalent flight.
Who Is Lufthansa Allegris Business Class Right For?
Allegris is the right choice if you want a premium European carrier with a modern, competitive business class product and a strong connection hub for onward travel across Europe.
The Business Suite is genuinely one of the better enclosed-suite products now flying, and at the right fare, it offers a level of privacy that competes directly with Qatar’s Qsuites and Singapore Airlines’. If you’re connecting through Frankfurt or Munich to Italy, Greece, or other Southern European destinations, Lufthansa’s hub strength is hard to match.
The Classic Seat is solid but not exceptional. Travelers who prioritize dining quality, pajamas, or premium amenities on every seat, not just the suites, may find Qatar Airways or Singapore Airlines more satisfying on comparable routes.
The seat type complexity is the most unusual aspect of Allegris. Choosing the wrong seat type for a 10-hour overnight flight is an avoidable mistake, and it helps to understand the options before you arrive at the seat map screen.
