United Polaris is the airline’s flagship long-haul business class. It offers lie-flat seats, Saks Fifth Avenue bedding, and a multi-course dining service. In addition, it includes access to dedicated Polaris Lounges at six US airports. Since 2022, every Polaris seat has direct aisle access. That means no climbing over a neighbor to reach the aisle.
This year, 2026, is an important year of change for Polaris. First, United launched a three-tier fare system in April: Base, Standard, and Flexible. As a result, not all Polaris tickets include the same benefits. The cheapest fares no longer include access to the Polaris Lounge. Second, United also launched the new “Elevated” 787-9 Dreamliner. This aircraft features the new Polaris Studio suite with a sliding privacy door and a 27-inch 4K OLED screen. The Studio is available as a $499 upgrade. For a full breakdown of Studio versus standard Polaris, read our dedicated comparison article.
Here is the honest verdict: United Polaris is a strong, competitive business class. However, it isn’t the world’s best. Qatar Qsuite and ANA The Room still lead on privacy and space. That said, the Polaris Lounge is one of the best ground experiences among US carriers. The seat is fully flat, and the Saks bedding is excellent. Nevertheless, the 2026 fare changes add complexity. This review explains what you need to know before you book United Airlines business class flights.
United Polaris Fare Tiers in 2026: Base, Standard, and Flexible
Most travellers don’t know the new tier system exists. They book the cheapest Polaris ticket and assume they get everything. They don’t.
United announced the three-tier structure on April 3, 2026. It rolled out first in select markets and is expanding throughout the year. In practice, many old lowest-priced Polaris fares are now called “Base.” The seat is the same. The in-flight service is the same. However, the ground experience is not.

*Unused Base tickets can be cancelled for a fee. The remaining value applies toward a new ticket.
In simple terms, a Base fare gets you the lie-flat seat, full meals, and bedding. However, you go to a United Club before your flight — not the Polaris Lounge. For a short overnight flight where you’ll sleep the whole way, Base can be good value. In contrast, on a 14-hour flight to Asia, the Polaris Lounge shower and restaurant matter a lot. In that case, Standard or Flexible is the smarter choice.
One more note: MileagePlus award tickets still book into non-Base fare classes as of mid-2026. Therefore, award passengers still get Polaris Lounge access. However, this could change, so verify when you book.
United Polaris Seat: What You Actually Get
The main Polaris fleet covers Boeing 767, 777, and standard 787 aircraft. All are configured 1-2-1 across the cabin. That means every seat has direct aisle access. Window seats (the A and K positions) sit next to the fuselage. They offer a hard wall to lean against, which helps during sleep. The middle seats (D and G) face each other at a slight angle. The divider between them lowers, so they work well for couples who want to share a meal or conversation.
Standard Polaris seats are roughly 76 to 78 inches long when flat and 22 to 23 inches wide. Most passengers can sleep comfortably. Storage includes a shoe cubby, a personal item space, and USB and AC power outlets. There is also a side slot for a water bottle or phone. It’s not as generous as Qatar Qsuite, but it is practical. Screens are 16 inches on older jets and 19 inches on newer aircraft. Both support touchscreen and remote control.

The One Layout to Avoid
Some older Boeing 777-200ER aircraft still fly with a 2-4-2 cabin layout. In that setup, middle-row passengers have no direct aisle access. This is the only remaining weakness in Polaris fleet consistency. Fortunately, it is easy to check. When you search for flights, the seat map appears during booking. If you see 2-4-2 instead of 1-2-1, pick a different flight. It is worth it on any long-haul route.
Best Seats on Standard Polaris
For solo travellers, choose A or K window seats. You get a hard wall to rest against and more privacy. For couples, the D and G middle seats in the same row are ideal. Lower the divider and you have a shared space. However, avoid row 1 and the last row on most aircraft. Row 1 is near the front galley, so crew activity starts early. Similarly, the last row is near the rear galley. Finally, if you see rows 1 and 9 on a 787-9, confirm which aircraft you’re on. Those rows on the Elevated 787-9 hold Studio suites that cost $499 extra.
United Polaris Lounge: Access Rules, Locations, and What’s Inside
The Polaris Lounge is United’s strongest advantage on the ground. There are six locations, all at major long-haul hub airports. There is no paid entry, no credit card access, and no one-time passes. For most passengers, there is also no guest access. Either you qualify or you don’t. Moreover, as of April 2026, who qualifies has changed significantly.

Locations
Polaris Lounges are at six US airports: Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Houston Intercontinental (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), Newark (EWR), San Francisco (SFO), and Washington Dulles (IAD). If your departure airport isn’t on that list, you go to a United Club instead. That applies regardless of your fare class or status.
What’s Inside
Each Polaris Lounge has a full à la carte restaurant with table service. This is not a buffet. The menu rotates and typically covers starters, mains, and dessert. Arrive at least two hours before boarding, especially at SFO and EWR. During peak evening departures, dining wait times can be long.
In addition, each lounge has shower suites with Therabody products. Day beds and quiet rest areas are also available, though space is limited. In particular, IAH has limited shower access at busy times. Furthermore, all locations have bar service, coffee, and free Wi-Fi. SFO and EWR are generally the two strongest locations overall.
Who Gets Access as of May 2026
The April 14, 2026 policy significantly narrowed Polaris Lounge access. Here is the current picture:
United’s own passengers:
- Standard and Flexible Polaris fare holders on long-haul international routes: full access ✓
- Base Polaris fare holders: United Club only, no Polaris Lounge ✗
- Premium transcontinental passengers (EWR–LAX, EWR–SFO, EWR–SEA): Polaris Lounge now included ✓
Star Alliance partner passengers (as of April 14, 2026):
- ANA business and first class: ✓
- Air New Zealand business class: ✓
- ITA Airways business class: ✓
- Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines business class: ✓
- Lufthansa, ANA, SWISS first class: ✓ (with one guest)
- Turkish Airlines business class: ✗ (United Club only)
- Singapore Airlines business class: ✗ (United Club only)
- Air Canada: ✗
- Air India, LOT Polish, TAP, EVA Air, Asiana, Thai, SAS, EgyptAir: ✗
Star Alliance Gold status alone does not get you into the Polaris Lounge. If you are connecting through the US on an excluded carrier, plan around the United Club instead. Verify access rules before you travel.

What the Flight Actually Feels Like
Sleep
The Saks Fifth Avenue bedding is one of the best sleep setups in US business class. Each seat gets a duvet, a day blanket, a large pillow, and a cooling gel pillow. In fact, United is the only US carrier that provides two pillows per seat. A mattress pad is also available on request.
Slippers are included on international routes. On overnight transatlantic flights, most passengers get four to six hours of sleep. That’s far better than premium economy on the same route. Additionally, a turndown service is available on request on flights over six hours.
Dining
The onboard meal service is multi-course: appetiser, salad, main, dessert, and cheese on longer routes. However, there is no pre-order system like Singapore Airlines’ Book the Cook. Selection is first-come, first-served from the moment the cart leaves the galley. On popular routes with limited options, your preferred main may be gone by the time service reaches the rear of the cabin. Therefore, if your meal choice matters, pick a seat near the front or board early and ask first. Also worth noting: from August 2026, United is adding new Chef’s Table menus created by chefs from major hub cities.

Entertainment
Older Polaris aircraft have 16-inch screens. Newer deliveries have 19-inch screens. Both are touchscreen and support a remote. Noise-reducing Meridian headphones are included. You can also pair your own headphones via Bluetooth. Wi-Fi currently costs $8 per session for MileagePlus members and $10 for non-members on most non-Starlink flights. However, United’s Starlink rollout is underway. The new Elevated 787-9 has Starlink from day one. Furthermore, United expects over 800 aircraft to have Starlink by end of 2026. Full fleet completion is targeted for end of 2027. Starlink is free for MileagePlus members and supports streaming and video calls.
Amenity Kit
Since late 2024, United’s Polaris amenity kit has been made in partnership with Therabody. The kit comes in a case shaped like a Theragun, available in light or dark grey. Inside you’ll find an eye serum, face spray, hand cream, and a cleansing towelette. In addition, the kit includes earplugs, a sleep mask, socks, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and tissues. Therabody products are also used in the Polaris Lounge shower suites. Passengers in Polaris Studio suites on the Elevated 787-9 receive an upgraded kit.
The New Elevated 787-9 and Polaris Studio
The Elevated 787-9 entered service in April 2026. It is the most significant Polaris product development in years. The new Polaris Studio suite is around 25% larger than a standard Polaris seat. It also has a sliding privacy door, a 27-inch 4K OLED screen, and a dedicated snack bar. The Studio upgrade costs $499 and is open to Standard and Flexible fare holders. Current routes are San Francisco to Singapore and San Francisco to London Heathrow, with more planned for 2026 and 2027. For the full breakdown, including seat specs, the privacy door details, and the upgrade verdict, read our dedicated Studio Polaris comparison here.
United Polaris vs Delta One vs American Flagship: 2026 Comparison
All three US carriers offer strong international business class in 2026. The gaps between them have narrowed over the past five years. However, real differences remain. Here is where each one stands.
United Polaris has the best pre-flight ground experience of the three. The Polaris Lounge, with sit-down dining and shower suites, is stronger than what Delta and American offer at the same airports. The 1-2-1 seat layout is also consistent across most of the fleet. In addition, premium transcontinental routes now include Polaris service and lounge access. On the other hand, onboard food doesn’t match the best Asian or Middle Eastern carriers. Furthermore, the new Base fare tier adds a layer of complexity at booking.
Delta One consistently scores higher for onboard food quality. That has been Delta’s clearest strength for several years. Delta One Suites on select A350 and 767 aircraft also have full-height privacy doors. In contrast, Delta Sky Clubs, while good, don’t match the Polaris Lounge for showers and sit-down dining. Bedding and seat dimensions are broadly similar to Polaris.
American Airlines Flagship Business offers the most private hard product of the three, when you fly the right aircraft. The fully enclosed Flagship Suite on the 777-300ER is hard to beat for in-seat privacy. Flagship Lounges in key hubs are also strong. However, American has a serious fleet consistency problem. You might get a Flagship Suite or an older angled-flat seat depending on the specific aircraft. Therefore, always check the exact aircraft and seat map before you book American.
In summary: For the best ground experience, choose United. For the best food in the air, Delta has the edge. For maximum in-seat privacy, American’s Flagship Suite wins — but only on specific routes and aircraft.
How to Get the Most from United Polaris
1. Always check the aircraft type before booking. Online search shows the seat map during the search. Look for 1-2-1 in business class. If you see 2-4-2, that’s the old 777-200ER layout. It’s worth switching to a different flight, especially on a route over six hours. If you’re booking over the phone, just ask your agent to book you on a flight with the 1-2-1 layout.
2. Know which fare tier you’re buying. As of April 2026, the cheapest Polaris tickets are Base fares. The seat and meals are the same as Standard. However, Base passengers use United Clubs, not Polaris Lounges. If you have a few hours before boarding at a lounge hub, Standard is likely worth the extra cost. On the other hand, if you won’t use the lounge, Base works fine.
3. Use miles on premium transcontinental routes. Newark–Los Angeles, Newark–San Francisco, and Newark–Seattle now offer full Polaris service. That includes lie-flat seats and Polaris Lounge access. In addition, these routes often cost fewer miles than transatlantic or transpacific redemptions.
4. For the Polaris Studio decision: If you’re booking SFO–Singapore or SFO–London and want to know whether the $499 Studio upgrade is right for you, the answer depends on several factors. For the full breakdown, read our dedicated comparison here.
United Polaris FAQs
What is United Polaris business class?
United Polaris is United Airlines’ long-haul international business class. It launched in 2016. The product is available on most widebody aircraft flying international routes. It is also available on select premium transcontinental US routes. Core features include lie-flat seats in a 1-2-1 layout, Saks Fifth Avenue bedding, multi-course dining, and access to Polaris Lounges at six US hub airports. Moreover, all Polaris seats have had direct aisle access since 2022.
Does United Polaris have lie-flat seats?
Yes. All United Polaris seats lie fully flat for sleeping. The length is roughly 76 to 78 inches. Since 2022, every seat also has direct aisle access. That means no passenger has to step over a neighbour to get up. However, some older Boeing 777-200ER aircraft still have a 2-4-2 layout that pre-dates the full retrofit. Therefore, always check the seat map before you book to confirm your specific aircraft.
What is included in United Polaris business class?
All Polaris fares include the lie-flat seat, multi-course dining, Saks Fifth Avenue bedding, a Therabody amenity kit, and a 16-to-19-inch screen with Meridian headphones. Slippers are also included on international routes. Standard and Flexible fares additionally include two checked bags, free seat selection, and Polaris Lounge access. In contrast, Base fares cover most in-flight items but limit you to United Clubs on the ground and allow only one checked bag.
Which airports have a United Polaris Lounge?
There are six Polaris Lounges in the US: Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Houston Intercontinental (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), Newark (EWR), San Francisco (SFO), and Washington Dulles (IAD). If your airport is not on this list, you will use a United Club instead. That applies regardless of your fare class or status. SFO and EWR are generally considered the strongest locations for dining and showers.
Who gets access to the United Polaris Lounge?
As of April 2026, access is limited to United Standard and Flexible Polaris passengers on qualifying routes. Base fare holders are excluded. On the partner side, access is limited to ANA, Air New Zealand, ITA Airways, and Lufthansa Group carriers (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines).
In contrast, most other Star Alliance passengers, including those on Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Air Canada, and EVA Air, are no longer eligible. They are redirected to United Clubs instead. Furthermore, Star Alliance Gold status alone does not grant Polaris Lounge access. There is no paid entry or credit card pathway.
Does United Polaris have direct aisle access?
Yes, on all current Polaris aircraft. The 1-2-1 layout means every seat — window and middle — has a clear path to the aisle. United completed this fleet retrofit in 2022. However, the Boeing 777-200ER on certain routes may still have the older 2-4-2 layout. In that configuration, middle seats do not have direct aisle access. Therefore, always check the seat map when booking to confirm your aircraft.
What is the difference between United Polaris and United business class?
United Polaris is the full long-haul product with lie-flat seats, Polaris Lounge access, and multi-course dining. In contrast, some United domestic routes operate “United First” with standard recliner seats — not lie-flat. These are a very different, less premium product. When booking, confirm that your flight shows “Polaris” in the seat map. As of 2026, premium transcontinental routes like Newark–Los Angeles also include full Polaris service with lie-flat seats.
Is United Polaris worth it?
For long-haul flights over eight hours, Polaris is strong value when booked on the right fare. The lie-flat sleep and Saks bedding make a real difference on overnight routes. Moreover, the Polaris Lounge is the best pre-flight ground experience of any US carrier. However, the answer also depends on which fare tier you choose. Standard and Flexible deliver the full experience. Base removes lounge access. So consider your route, your departure airport, and how much the ground experience matters to you.
What is the United Polaris Studio and how much does it cost?
The Polaris Studio is a new enclosed suite on the Elevated 787-9 Dreamliner. It costs $499 as an upgrade on Standard or Flexible fares. Current routes include San Francisco to Singapore and San Francisco to London. For the full comparison — including whether the upgrade is worth it — read our dedicated Studio vs standard Polaris article.
Does United Polaris have Wi-Fi?
Yes. Wi-Fi is available on most Polaris flights. On non-Starlink aircraft, it costs $8 per session for MileagePlus members and $10 for non-members. However, United is rolling out Starlink across its fleet. The new Elevated 787-9 has Starlink from day one. Furthermore, United expects over 800 aircraft to have Starlink by end of 2026. Full fleet completion is targeted for end of 2027. Starlink is free for MileagePlus members and fast enough for streaming and video calls.
The Bottom Line
United Polaris in 2026 is a strong, competitive international business class. It is better on the ground than most US rivals. In the air, it is broadly comparable to Delta and American. However, the April 2026 fare changes mean you need to pay attention when booking. The tier you choose has a real impact on your ground experience. For example, arriving at EWR expecting a Polaris Lounge shower on a Base fare is an unpleasant surprise. At the same time, the new Elevated 787-9 with Polaris Studio is a genuine step forward. It is available now on SFO long-haul routes and expanding through 2027.
